Horse looking over natural landscape

Why Horses?

Horses delight and inspire us. To meet them unfettered, in their own environment is an experience that empowers horses and humans.  Horses, by their nature, help us see ourselves more clearly and to become more centered and aware. They live in presence, and invite us to join them, here and now. Our gift to them is to see and respect them for who they are. Not to exploit them. Our daily meditation is taking care of the horses and the land we share.

Here, at Over the Edge, we are leaving behind horse care that is convenient for humans, but damaging to horses. We seek a more equitable arrangement, where horses enjoy the benefits of domestication without the attrition. We listen to the natural rhythms of the herd and allow the horses to guide us in their care. So we learn what they really need for true well-being. This way, we give them everything they naturally need AND the advantages of domestication. We call it ‘Nature Plus’ horse care.

We are exploring how horses relate to us when given choices. At Over The Edge the horses live in an environment that provides their biological and psychological requirements as a free roaming herd. Will they still choose to associate with us? How? When? Why? Every day we learn something new as our relationship with the herd deepens.

Our horses can only be as free as we allow ourselves to be. Free yourself, free your horse and vice versa. Awareness is the key to freedom. Horses can support this, come and find out how. If you love horses, you are welcome to come visit. Check out the options below.

In the Presence of  Horses

For anyone who wants to know themselves more deeply and find the power of softness. No previous experience with horses is necessary.

By their nature horses act as a mirror for humans, allowing us to see our patterns and behaviours more clearly. Horses can teach us about communication, clarity of purpose, strength and vulnerability, being centered and connected, and present with what is.

We will do simple meditations and awareness exercises to improve communication and observation skills and connect you to the nature of your being.

The time together will be fluid (learning how to flow is one of the first skills a human needs when being with horses). What we focus on will be dictated by your interests and what the herd gets up to.

Developing Tranquil Assurance

All great horsemen have one thing in common, an inner quietness that doesn’t waiver, I call it tranquil assurance. We can all develop this state of being for the good of our horses.

My philosophy says that we should not be training our horses but training ourselves. When body and mind are quiet and aligned you can communicate effectively, making it easy for your horse to learn.

Using body and energy awareness techniques you will develop your own inner quietness.

You will learn directly from the herd by observing the subtlety of their communication and being with them in freedom.

We will practice qi gong to increase grounding, centering and energy awareness, and aikido exercises to develop your ability to direct your energy and influence your horse clearly and softly.
